Alliance for Sustainable Azuero: Invitation

Azuero Peninsula suffers a deep environmental crisis that threatens the poorest populations, especially in rural areas. Climate change has ruined crops and livestock; the rivers have dried up as a result of a prolonged drought; poverty deepens.

Faced with this situation, various organizations of civil, academic, community partnership Azuero, Panama, have initiated a process to unite efforts to improve social and environmental conditions. We recognize the interest of the Panamanian government in addressing these problems, but the answers are advancing slowly and with difficulty. Moreover Municipalities lack resources, qualified staff and technical and financial support.

Is essential the contribution of the private and social organizations. We call on non-governmental organizations, foundations and international academic institutions to join this effort. We wish to establish cooperative relations with international organizations, to exchange knowledge and experiences, and the joint search for financial resources, to solve the serious problems facing communities Azuero.

We suggest focusing efforts on the following areas:

1) Innovative systems of water supply, especially for small rural communities of less than 3,000 inhabitants.
2) innovative systems management of solid waste, including community recycling, with the concept of zero waste.
3) Design and construction of green homes, sustainable intended for poor farmers to promote sustainable human settlements.

4) Design and implementation of projects of voluntary carbon markets as a mechanism to promote the conservation and recovery of forests.
5) Design and implementation of networks of community-based tourism.

The thematic agenda is open to the contributions of the participating organizations.

We hope to have formalized the alliance to May 31, 2016.
