Open Letter to His Holiness Pope Francisco to mark the first papal speech before the United States Congress

Francisco Rivas Ríos.

September 24, 2015
We hereby welcome you to our country and his message of "climate as common good." We urge our politicians in Washington DC, the citizens of this country and the world to pay attention to his message of "hear both the cry of the earth as the cry of the poor" and to honor his call for "a universal new solidarity" for address the ethical, economic and environmental crisis afflicting humanity.

The global climate crisis, as expressed in his encyclical, most affects the poorest of the world. Similarly, as seen in their own country, Argentina, the irresponsible use of chemical fertilizers, toxic pesticides and the introduction of GM crop agriculture has destroyed disproportionately health, land, biodiversity and the sacred beauty of this world.

We are aware of the urgent need that has been expressed to develop policies that reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. However, we also believe that if we are to avoid a global crisis, we must do more than simply reduce emissions. We must also urgently and immediately begin to remove the carbon found in the atmosphere, global, and return to the soil from which it came, leaving again provide land its natural abundance.

We also share your conviction that everything in the world is connected, and "seek only a technical remedy to every environmental problem that arises is to isolate things that in reality are intertwined and hide the true and deeper problems of the world system."

In this spirit, we urge you to continue reporting about the role that industrial agriculture has had on the destruction of our soil and water and fails to alleviate world hunger. We ask that you keep calling attention, as he did in his encyclical, about the role of small farmers feed the world, in small plots, and they are the pastors of the health of the land and the soil for future generations .

Also respectfully bring to your attention the Rodale Institute White Paper, entitled "Regenerative Organic Agriculture and Climate Change", which states that by converting agricultural industrial large-scale production of affordable, safe and economic agroecological practices, can capture more than 100 percent of current CO2 emissions and also bring food production back in the hands of small farmers and herders.

We believe that while certain geographic regions and certain populations with fewer resources will initially be most affected by the damage caused by the selfish exploitation of land and resources, often for commercial profit of a few, the day in which including wealthy individuals and nations may not maintain the devastation at bay.

As expressed so succinctly, "climate change is a moral issue." We also would propose humbly "feed everyone in the world is a moral problem," just as it is to allow everyone in the world can grow their own food, feed themselves and their families and their neighbors.

We are running out of time. We thank you for your courage and accept his challenge to approach this complex crisis of global warming looking for solutions that not only protect nature, but also fight poverty and return dignity to those who have been excluded.

Respectfully,

Commission Directive Regeneration International
